Resize and compress for any platform

A profile photo is displayed as a small circle almost everywhere, so what matters is that your face survives the shrink. Crop to a square, size it to what the platform actually uses — 400 pixels for LinkedIn, 320 for Twitter, 170 for Facebook — and it will stay crisp instead of turning into a smudge in the corner of a comment.

Questions
Is my photo sent anywhere?
No. A picture of your face is exactly the kind of thing not to hand to an anonymous web service, so this one resizes on your device only.
What size should a profile picture be?
Square, and at least 400 by 400. LinkedIn displays up to 400, Twitter 400, Facebook 170, and most other sites less. One 400 pixel square covers all of them.
Why does mine look blurry?
Usually because the original was smaller than the display size and got stretched. Start from the largest version you have — enlarging cannot invent detail.
Can I do it on my phone?
Yes. Pick a shot from your camera roll, resize, save it back, then set it in whichever app you are updating.
